On Tuesday, January 7th 2014, a 42-year-old Guadalajara man was officially sentenced by a federal judge here in Houston for the role he played in trying to smuggle tons of cocaine into the country. He was given a sentence of 25 years in a U.S. prison. The sentencing came following years of investigation and after the man had earlier pled guilty to charges of cocaine conspiracy. Law enforcement officers recovered 2 tons of cocaine during the investigation, however reports indicate that there may have been at least 3 tons scheduled to be smuggled from Panama through Mexico and eventually into the state of Texas. In a similar case, another Mexican national was sentenced on Tuesday to serve 10 years in federal prison for drug trafficking charges involving the possession of methamphetamines with intent to distribute and using a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime.
